Gesture Control Home Automation - Crestron Meets Kinect

In a December 2011 blog post we discussed the future possibilities of using voice control and gestures to control TV's in the future (Siri or Kinect, What the Future of TV and Home Automation Might Be). Who knew the home automation / smart home control world would jump on this so quickly. The video above shows slideshow pictures being advanced and lights turning on an off with simple gestures. A Microsoft Kinect is reading the gestures. It communicates the gestures to a Crestron home automation system, and it 'tells' whatever you want to control what to do.

Crestron KinectThis Crestron - Kinect collaboration is shown in prototype form and looks to be an exciting control option for the future. Since Crestron is an open control system platform, the control possibilities are endless. I'm personally interested to see if gesture control is something clients will ask for.

The other potential game-changer in home automation is voice control. The video below shows how Carnes Audio Video, an electronic systems contractor in Arkansas, programmed a Crestron home automation system to receive commands from Siri, the iPhone 4S virtual assistant. Watch as a fully integrated home theater is voice-controlled. Very nice!
